Committee Meetings and Public Events

SbN Local History Society is delighted to announce that on Tuesday 5th May 2026 Edward Martin will deliver a presentation on Humphrey Repton’s designs for Tendring Park. This will be followed by a tour of the Estate with Edward pointing out key aspects of Repton’s designs.

Born in Bury St. Edmunds, in 1752, Repton later moved to Norfolk and Essex, where he set himself up as a ‘landscape gardener’ (a term he coined) in 1788.  He became the last great landscape designer of the eighteenth century and famously produced ‘Red Books’ detailing his landscape designs for his clients including one for Tendring Hall, Stoke-by-Nayland (1791 for Sir William Rowley). During his life he designed around 400 landscapes and gardens.

Edward Martin worked as an archaeologist with Suffolk County Council for many years, specialising in prehistory and historic landscape studies and has written and lectured widely on the archaeology, history, landscape, buildings and gardens of Suffolk and East Anglia. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, a Vice-President and a past chairman of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History.

Tea/ Coffee and delicious home-made cakes will be provided too!
